The chestnut colt was a handsome one - his coat bright with an unusual white stripe and spotted with birdcatcher spots. But that wasn't what got Lucy's attention... At least, that is to say, it wasn't the only thing that caught her attention. He was one of those high-energy, high-maintenance horses - either you worked with him a lot, or you dealt with the consequences. Generally, the consequences weren't worth being lazy. She somehow suspected that he would be worth the work, however. She wasn't sure what it was, but something told her he would make his mark on the track.
Seeing the jockey, the colt suddenly lost interest in the warm-up the handlers were running with him and was pulling them across the yard. Lucy sighed, but couldn't help laughing slightly as Slick came to a halt beside her. She stroked the chestnut's nose, stared into his eyes and smiled. "Yup, you got it. We're going for a run. Try to behave today, okay?" She looked to the handlers apologetically. "Really, guys, I can't help it. Slick here just loves me."
The jockey climbed into the saddle with a leg-up from one of the dust-covered handlers and wondered briefly where Alexia could have got to. It just wasn't like her to be late for a workout, and when it came to Slick it was never a good idea to keep him waiting too long. Well, maybe she'd find out later - she would just run a simple workout to try and take the edge off of the colt's energy and make sure he really was ready for the start they had planned for him. Not that she doubted it, she just wanted to be sure they didn't waste his potential.
As they reached the track, the colt hot on his hooves and keeping the handlers on their toes Lucy noted that Alexia still hadn't arrived. "Let's gate him, guys. Keep him thinking. If we do the same work time and time again he'll tire of it." The handlers nodded, heading behind the starting contraption and loaded the colt without a hitch. Slick didn't mess around, didn't fuss even a little as he entered the gate and other than a little fidgeting had no issues.
The gates opened and the colt flew forwards. His break was clean, classy. It was the start that jockeys and trainers dreamed of with a fast pace being set from the off. It was going to be a short work and Lucy was quick to push him - feeling the colt's eager response as they moved toward the rail. "That's it, Slick." she whispered, eyes fixed on the track before her. "Just keep it up."
The chestnut colt maintained his speed - short strides came in quick succession, turf kicking up in his wake. Their was a lot of power evident as he ran, the first furlong over quickly and the second one soon upon them. Lucy was smiling as she urged the colt forwards again, although this time she started to drive him in earnest. He didn't pick up much in the way of speed, but he certainly wasn't slowing down. The determined juvenile was heading forwards without hesitation. "Come on, Slick. You can do this." She wouldn't use the whip, not in a workout, but she knew it would just take a tap. He'd dig that bit deeper, fight that bit harder. They passed the post, and Lucy knew he was about as ready as he was going to get.
